To mark Arbor Day on 5 June, we partnered with Forest & Bird Upper Hutt and Fergusson Intermediate School to plant more than 400 native trees at the rear of Barton’s Bush.
With the help of 40 enthusiastic students, teachers, and Council staff volunteers, the planting extended an existing stand of native trees, supporting ongoing efforts to protect and restore Upper Hutt’s natural environment.

“This was a fantastic example of community collaboration in action,” said Mike Ryan , Group Manager Community Services. “The students brought incredible energy and curiosity, and it was great to see so many people committed to creating a greener future for Upper Hutt.”
The planting builds on the city’s commitment to native restoration and biodiversity and gave students a meaningful, hands-on opportunity to connect with conservation.
Arbor Day, held on 5 June in New Zealand, is a day dedicated to planting and celebrating trees.
