Why is Timberlea Park getting a new gauntlet?
Published on 28 April 2025
Our Open Spaces and Facilities team will be replacing the old gauntlet at Timberlea Park with a new play tower this May.
Timberlea Park is a cherished community space, and ensuring it remains safe and enjoyable for families is a priority. The old gauntlet, which had deteriorated due to rusting metal footings and age factors, posed safety risks to the children playing on.
This project is not merely an upgrade of equipment but an ongoing commitment by Council to maintaining a safe, sustainable space for future generations.
The replacement will be a new Funnel Web Maxi - Ultimate Play Tower that can accommodate up to 45 users. With its 6-corner design, this new play tower will allow tamariki to climb to the top using various routes and develop their motor skills while they enjoy hanging and balancing on it. The viewing net platform at the top offers a breathtaking view of the entire play area.
The structure will be installed by Playground Centre along with a top up of loose fill by local contractors.
The estimated project delivery and installation is planned for May 2025.
What are the benefits of a new play tower?
A new play tower provides more than just a functional replacement. Active play is essential for children’s physical and cognitive development, helping build strength, coordination, and confidence. The play tower offers a fun challenge that fosters resilience and problem-solving, while encouraging children to engage creatively with their surroundings—skills that will serve them throughout life.
How does this benefit the community?
Investing in Timberlea Park ensures that it continues to be a vital hub for families and visitors. By replacing the old gauntlet with the play tower, we’re supporting the park’s role as a safe, vibrant, and welcoming place for people of all ages. Well-maintained parks foster a sense of community and belonging, making them essential spaces for connection and recreation.
