Yesterday morning, a Karakia took place at Akatārawa Cemetery to officially mark the start of Phase One in a three-phase expansion project. The ceremony was led by Tautoko Ratu (Te Ātiawa/N.Toa Rangatira) Kaitakawaenga Kaupapa Māori for Upper Hutt City Council.
Vegetation Mulching for the project began yesterday morning and will take 10 days to complete.
Akatārawa Cemetery currently serves both Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt communities, offering burial and ashes interment services. With 10–14 years of burial capacity remaining, this project is an important step for the Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt communities.
This is a joint project with Hutt City Council. We will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
