Next week, 12–18 May, Waka Kotahi and NZ Police are proud to support Road Safety Week 2025 with this year’s focus on distracted driving. While speed is one of the most critical factors in crash outcomes, this year we’re shining a spotlight on distracted driving, which continues to cause serious harm on our roads.

According to NZTA’s Public Attitudes research (May 2024):

  • Nearly 40 percent of New Zealanders admit to sending or reading text messages while in a vehicle.
  • Nearly 20 percent check or reply to social media messages.

Before you drive, have a hmmm—and put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’. Because if you get hurt, who gets harmed?

Together, by slowing down and staying focused, we can all help create safer roads for everyone. What you can do: Share campaign messages with your networks and on social media. Support local events or initiatives happening in your region. Talk to your friends and whānau about how we can all contribute to safer travel. Together, we can help make every journey a safe one.
