Matariki Puanga: Manu Aute Kite Making Workshop

Participants will be introduced to the traditional art of manu aute (Māori kite making), a practice that combines creativity, storytelling, and cultural knowledge. Traditionally made using natural materials, manu aute were used for communication, recreation, and sometimes ceremonial purposes, carrying deep cultural significance within te ao Māori.

Guided by local knowledge holders, participants will learn about the history of manu aute, the symbolism behind kite design, and the tikanga (customs) associated with their creation and use.

This hands-on workshop provides an opportunity to connect with Māori heritage through making and learning, while exploring the values of patience, balance, and expression embedded in the practice.
