Criterion Lane/Fergusson Drive carpark update

Carpark under construction

In May, we announced that a new sealed carpark is being constructed in the green space opposite the Civic Centre and Whirinaki Whare Taonga, next to the VTNZ building.

The new carpark will provide about 70 car parking spaces and will also include:

  • a new pedestrian link between Fergusson Drive and Criterion Lane
  • protection of the significant trees
  • some landscaping and gardens
  • power outlets to allow the space to potentially be used for other events and activities on the weekend.

We were aiming to have the carpark ready for use in July, but that was weather dependent, and we have had some shocking weather.

The main cause is the rain, and while we have had fine days in between the wet weather, the basecourse was saturated in parts and was failing the required compaction requirements.

The good news is that we were finally able to get a water seal on the carpark on Tuesday after several days of fine weather. We need a couple of fine days before the contractors place the final surfacing. We’re aiming to do that in the next 7-14 days. It is weather dependent though.

We know parking is at a premium in the City Centre right now, so as soon as this is available for use, we’ll let you know.
