This August, our Council team is stepping up to tackle food waste by joining the #BeatTheBin challenge and we’d love our community to get involved too!

Did you know the average Kiwi household throws away around 82 kg of food every year? That’s like going to the supermarket, filling up 16 reusable shopping bags full of kai and throwing them straight into the bin.

Through small changes like better storage, smarter planning, and loving our leftovers, we can all make a big impact.

Participants receive weekly emails with practical challenges, tips, and motivational check-ins. Each week offers two challenge levels:

  • Quick Win (less than 10 minutes), and
  • Waste Warrior (more effort, greater impact).

The aim is to build momentum, not perfection—helping people feel good about the progress they make.

Challenge dates: 4–31 August 2025
Incentives: All participants are in the draw to win one of three $500 grocery vouchers and Love Food Hate Waste merch.

Join as an individual, whanau or organisation. A campaign toolkit is available with everything needed to promote and participate, including ready-made communications and assets.
