H2O Xtream Marks Milestone with Karakia Waerea
Published on 14 February 2025
This morning H20 celebrated a Karakia Waerea (Blessing), which was conducted by Mana Whenua and supported by whanau of Ōrongomai Marae.
A Karakia Waerea is used to mark the beginning of a new journey or to clear a path forward.
The concept resonates with this project, which has been an important journey for both the council and the community.
Staff, including lifeguards, will now occupy the building and familiarise themselves with critical areas of the facility. Additionally, this phase allows testing of the complete facility including the Hydroslides and ensuring the safety of all features before the public can enjoy them.
Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy said the blessing was enjoyed by all and marked a significant milestone for H2O Xtream.
“We’re an important step closer to the official opening of the facility, which I’m sure everyone is eagerly awaiting,” he says.
Once testing is complete, H20 will announce the official opening date. ‘We want to ensure all systems are fully operational and safe before making any public announcements, allowing time for any adjustments that may be necessary,’ says Mike Ryan, Group Manager Community Services.
