Night workers resurfacing a road

A MESSAGE FROM WAKA KOTAHI

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has begun its 2021–22 Wellington region state highway summer resurfacing season to keep our highways in good condition for the safety of all road users.

On State Highways 1 and 2, 20 sites in south Horowhenua, Kāpiti, Wellington and the Hutt totalling more than 25kms will be resurfaced from November through March. The warmer, drier weather provides the best conditions for laying large sections of chipseal and asphalt on busy highways so road users can drive on them as soon as the job is done.

Our repairs and general maintenance of highways and roadsides, including road-marking, drainage, barriers, signs and vegetation, are ongoing throughout the year.

In busy areas, works are undertaken at night. The lighter traffic flow at night allows us to avoid lengthy, disruptive traffic delays and means the job can be completed quickly and efficiently. During the day, works are undertaken when traffic is lighter and easier to manage, such as north of Masterton.

Neighbours will be notified prior to works starting. Scheduled dates may change if rain, unsuitable temperatures or other factors cause postponements.

How to drive through roadwork sites

  • People should allow extra time for their journeys, look out for roadwork signs and slow down as they approach worksites.
  • Please follow the instructions of traffic controllers, they are there to keep you safe - stop on request and obey temporary slower speed limits.
  • Where there is work to reconstruct the road’s subsurface, you will be driving on an unsealed surface.
  • Where there is fresh chipseal, you will be driving on loose chip.
  • In both cases, a temporary speed restriction of 30 or 50km/h will be in place both day and night until the road is ready to return to the usual speed limit.
  • The lower speed limits are there to keep you and our workers safe, and to protect the new surface and your vehicle. 

High impact jobs – expect detours and delays

Upper Hutt, River Road

  • Between Moonshine Road and Silverstream intersections, we will reconstruct the road’s subsurface and pave with asphalt at several sites through mid-January.
  • Work on the northbound and southbound sides of the highway will take place on different dates.
  • During the nightworks, detour via Fergusson Drive between Whakatiki Street and Silverstream intersections.
  • For several days you will be driving on unsealed road at a restricted speed for your and the road’s protection.
  • This work follows on from last January’s work in the area.

SH1 Wellington city

  • Through Wellington city, five sites on the highway will be resurfaced with asphalt at night.
  • From 5-9 December, the week of the Terrace Tunnel’s five warrant of fitness closures, we will resurface two sites north and south of the Terrace Tunnel, including the Karo Drive/Willis Street intersection.
  • In late January, we will resurface the eastern side of the Basin Reserve from the traffic lights near Mt Victoria Tunnel to south of Adelaide Road on one night.
  • In late February, expect a slow drive to the airport on four nights when we resurface a large section of Cobham Drive and the Cobham/Calabar Drive intersection.
