Community organisations in Upper Hutt received help from over seventy NZDF volunteers last Friday, as part of a Council partnership with NZDF’s Employee Volunteer Programme.

The mainly civilian staff from the Defence Equipment Management Organization (DEMO) unit rolled up their sleeves for nine community organisations:

  • Orongomai Marae – Painting, gardening and other related tasks
  • Rimutaka Inline Hockey Club Inc. –Organising and tidying storage area
  • Golder Cottage –Painting front picket fence, and gardening. 
  • Upper Hutt Forrest and Bird – Weed eradication, Old Mans Beard.
  • Compassion House – Decorating Christmas trees for residents 
  • Wellington City Mission – House cleaning for at risk social housing client
  • Spinners and Weavers Club – Painting of club rooms
  • Friends of the Mawaihakona Stream – Weed management and stream maintenance 
  • 4 a Better City Trust – Garden Maintenance and Development.

“We were excited to partner with DEMO as part of their employee volunteer programme, and help find volunteers for projects that provide benefit to the community” says Director of Community Services, Mike Ryan. “This was a great opportunity for valuable community organisations to benefit from volunteer support”.
