Ratepayer roll

Wherever you pay rates, you may be eligible to vote.

If you live elsewhere in New Zealand but own property in Upper Hutt, you may be able to vote in the Upper Hutt local elections. This is known as the ratepayer roll.

To do this, you’ll need to enrol on the Upper Hutt ratepayer roll. The closing date for ratepayer enrolment is 1 August 2025.

Who can enrol on the ratepayer roll?

 You may be eligible if:

  • You’re a registered parliamentary elector, and
  • You own property in Upper Hutt but don’t usually live here (non-resident), or
  • You’ve been nominated by a business, company, or organisation that pays rates on a property in Upper Hutt and you're not a resident of Upper Hutt.

Businesses, companies, societies or other organisations can nominate one person (a member or officer) to vote on their behalf.

You must re-enrol for every local election to stay on the ratepayer roll.

How many votes do I get?

Even if you own more than one property in Upper Hutt, you are only entitled to one vote per local authority area.

What to do if I miss the enrolment cut-off date

If you enrol or update your details after 1 August, you will not receive voting papers in the post.

You will instead need to request special voting papers from Upper Hutt's Deputy Electoral Officer by emailing elections@uhcc.govt.nz or calling 04 527 2133.
